Romería de la Virgen de la Fuensanta

The Romería de la Virgen de la Fuensanta is one of the most deeply rooted religious and cultural traditions in Murcia.

The Virgin of the Fuensanta, affectionately known as “La Morenica,” is the patron saint of the city and municipality. Her image resides in the Sanctuary of the Fuensanta in the mountainous area of Algezares.

Each year, she is brought down to the city in a solemn procession (the “bajada”) and later returned to her sanctuary in a major pilgrimage known as the Romería de Regreso (return).

In 2026, the traditional Romería of return is scheduled for Tuesday, September 15, 2026. This is the most popular and massive edition of the event. It begins with a farewell Mass at the Cathedral of Murcia early in the morning. Thousands of faithful, pilgrims, and cuadrillas (groups of devotees) then accompany the Virgin on the several-kilometer journey from the city center back up to her Sanctuary. The atmosphere blends profound devotion with festive elements: music, traditional dress, food stalls, and a strong sense of community as people walk the route together.

This romería marks the emotional closing of the Virgin’s stay in the city during the Fiestas de Septiembre and is considered one of the largest and most significant religious pilgrimages in southeastern Spain.

In addition to the September event, 2026 features an extraordinary centenary pilgrimage (marking 100 years since her canonical coronation) that began in April and includes visits to numerous pedanías and towns — but the classic September Romería remains the highlight for most locals and visitors.
